RC
Lasers at the Top Mark RYA Coaches Conference
- October 2002

"Have
a go, they're great fun!" And that was my introduction to model Laser
racing. As the RYA coach educator and a sailor myself I figured that
these were ideal tools for coaches trying to teach the intricacies of
racing to fledgling sailors. Added to that we had been using a conference
venue that overlooked a small lake and the benefits seemed obvious.
Nigel and David [pf the UK RC Laser Association] were our mentors for
the day and seemed to revel in the buoy laying procedure that involved
swimming around the lake in a dry suit. Even the local hippos and fishermen
seemed confused. Our one mistake for the whole day was to run the sailing
sessions throughout the day. I had to pry controls from transfixed coaches
and force them back into workshops, like an over bearing school master.
Seriously, the boats proved highly successful tool and a great ice breaker.
All comers were levelled in this battle of the minnows. A great addition
to the conference and I suspect a new source of income and competitors
to the class." Alan Olive RYA

The control
area at Wyboston Lakes was just about perfect for RC Yacht Racing |

|
The
RYA coaches took to the controls faster than we have seen from any other
group of newcomers to RC racing |

Mark
laying was a 'dry suit' job. Here Nigel Seary tries to set a mark of the
course but skippers were too keen to get on with the sailing |
